Below are just some answers to commonly asked questions. Please do not use this page as legal advice. Every situation is different, so it would be best to connect with your lawyer for anything legal.
We have a network of lawyers we partnered up with that we can connect you to depending on your needs.
The government decides and most often, it will all be passed on to:
A. The surviving married spouse, if no children
B. The surviving married spouse gets the preferential share and the rest is split between the spouse and children (number of children affects shares)
C. The estate goes to the closest living relative if the person had no spouse or children.
Notice how we said "married spouse", common-law may not count unless they were named specifically as a beneficiary. Always seek legal advice of you aren't certain!
If you inherited assets like a house, or stocks, or other things that you are profiting from, it becomes taxable income. Selling your primary residence is one thing, selling a secondary home that was passed down to you, you're profiting from, which means you will be looking at paying about two-thirds of what you gained to the CRA if it's above $250,000 (up to is half). If you inherited assets that give you a profit, it's best to consult an accountant.
If you can find another family member or a friend you can trust to take good care of the animal, that would be our number 1 answer. If you absolutely cannot find someone you know to take them, we can connect you to the Durham Region Animal Centre (also known as the Ontario SPCA) in Whitby. They understand these things happen and are happy to help you find a new home for your furry friend.
This is tough. For one, you may begin to feel guilty throwing out their belongings and start keeping more to yourself than you can handle... leading to another hoarding situation. Another thing to really be careful of is health hazards. Not all hoarding brings bugs and mice, but any hoarding could lead to injury. It would be best to get some help with a hoarder house. Whether that's professional cleaners with the right PPE, or someone you can trust to help sort through the items and keep you grounded.
